This collection explores the smaller side of hand-held reed-based instruments. It includes fine quality hand-crafted traditional Indian Shruti Boxes, a mini accordion and something we like to refer to as The Plastisax. We even found a 2-note paper and cardboard concertina. As always, we’ve sampled each instrument lovingly and thoroughly. We took them much farther than they were ever designed to go and found sounds surprisingly rich, full and playable. In the end, we just decided it was high time somebody give these little misfit toys the respect and attention to detail that they truly deserve.

The tabla is a popular Indian percussion instrument used in the classical, popular and devotional music of the Indian subcontinent and in Hindustani classical music. The instrument consists of a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres. To call tabla a mere percussion instrument would be a vast understatement of its musical depth, as one of the most revered of all classical Indian musical instruments. We worked with tabla master and jazz percussionist Sameer Gupta to capture a range of tabla rhythm, melody and soul. Sameer has bee a student and practitioner in the art of percussion for nearly 25 years, traveling the world to study and perform in some of the world’s most prestigious institutions and venues. The Tonehammer Bamboo Stick Ensemble is a powerful display of how far you can take a simple musical ingredient like bamboo poles, which provides a powerful clack sounds when they are smashed together and … serves as great tuned based instrument when (mis)treated the right way. Our Bamboo Stick Ensemble was recorded using a variety of 6′ long 2″ diameter Chinese bamboo poles. We were blown by the power of these sticks, since they made sounds we have never remotely encountered before. The impacts are powerful and sharp. They compliment our Tom Ensembles perfectly. The sustains were created by grinding the poles against wet and dry tile. Sometimes shrill, sometimes brassy and always freakin’ creepy. Great for horror and dark, dramatic ethnic scoring.

Welcome to our Bamblong (tuned bamboo log drum). The Bamblong is a small tuned percussion instrument, similar in principle to a marimba. It has 4 bamboo resonance chambers, roughly ranging between 1½ – 2¼ inches wide and 8 – 14 inches long, with sound holes in the top of each. The playing surfaces are thin bamboo planks, suspended on pegs over each bamboo log. It came with a set of mallets with flat, round heads that appear to be carved out of bicycle tire. It has a very crisp yet mellow, raspy note with a short sustain.

We realized that there is already a million other amazing piano libraries around, but none of them ever captured the authentic beauty of a dusty-old-haven’t-been-played-since-granny-lost-her-hearing upright piano. There are a number of broken and badly detuned strings, especially in the upper ranges. We couldn’t afford a repairman, so you’ll just have to live with them.

Frendo is a custom-built Tonehammer instrument. We created this monster by stringing bailing wire around and through through steel plates and bolts, over galvanize steel piping and across wood planks. It was meant to suffer. You can help it by mistreating it in horrible ways with screwdrivers, bows, drum sticks, mallets and fingers. The instrument holds a vast amount of otherworldly sounds, which is ideal for composers looking for new disturbing, horror-like textures for their scores. Frendo is partially a mallet instrument, recorded with wooden and rubber mallets, but is also a more traditional string instrument, since we recorded finger plucks and bows. It’s the sound of Satan’s cello, weeping softly for your burning soul.

Tonehammer decided to explore both instruments extensively by sampling two sets of professional Cajons (snare and non-snare) and three sets of professional Bongos (small, medium and large). We recorded them as ensemble groups, divisi groups and individual solo sets.
